The Time When I Got My First Tattoo

This was the day when I got my first tattoo.. October 30th is my birthday and this year I decided that I wanted to do something new or special everyday of the month. A tattoo was one of the biggest ideas I had.

Got hands on and contacted James Spooner who is THE vegan tattoo artist. We arranged an appointment, the creative process began and the day came!! The idea of getting owls is personal but I also wanted to have two of them.

owl tattoowl tattoThe idea of having one standing, the other one flying and on each side of my head comes from the changes life threw at me from one second to the next. I had life changing situations where at one point I had important people in my life, plans, etc and the next completely different scenario. Having the idea in mind had been on my mind ever since that time, so having my month birthday I couldn’t let it pass.. I finally went to west Hollywood to get it done. James was the coolest guy ever and it was over too soon.

I enjoyed so much the whole day. From getting there, crossing half county, getting it done, talking to James.. anyway totally worth it!!

Wise words from Gretchen Wyler. I read this quote a couple of days ago and I decided to share it because that is what people should hear and really understand when they refuse to know what their food contains and the origen and the trajectory it had to go thru before it is on the plate. 

Gretchen Wyler was an American actress with a true passion for animal protection as she founded the Genesis Awards for their protection. A person worth to be admired for giving voice to those who not everyone hear. My respect to her memory and footprint.

Vegan meal

Vegan meal

This is one of my out-of-the-blue recepies I came up with the other day! 🙂 I just wanted to post the pic to show how yummi and healthy a meal can look.

This is something I made with two balls of falafel placed on top of a greek salad and accompained with some asparagus baked with a lil pepper, garlic and vegan butter mmm!! 🙂

This is a quick and balanced option for a complete meal!

In this blog you will find information about a conscious way of life; let me explain.

This blog is a way to pass on knowledge I have found really helpful in my life about vegan lifestyle, animal consciousness, environmental issues, among others. I have had this idea for quite a while now, but it’s coming to life now because I’ve been inspired by my cousin, here’s why… 

I moved from a foreign country a while ago, and living a vegan lifestyle (the only one in my family), I came in this new world and let everybody know the choices I take when it comes to eating (which was one of the first things that came up being just arriving with them), most of them were surprised on how I manage to do it and actually really interested in eating healthier; anyway, it hadn’t really came to life 100% that wiliness to do so, until just two days ago my cousin said that he saw a video about reasons to become vegetarian and he ended up feeling guilty to eat animals, he wanted to get informed and for me that’s one of the top reasons to do this, because there are lots of resources online, but is important to get objectively informed, definitely that’s one excellent initiative. 

Anyway, I’ll get deeper on the matters as I go on writing on further entries.

child obesity –

Hello to all of you readers out there!!  🙂

Today I wanna talk to you about some facts I’ve seen lately at the consultation, that’s child obesity; yeah, this world’s pandemia that has been growing bigger in front of our eyes…

This week I had many cases related to this, and though it is well known that every case is different (and they were indeed) I also saw a lot of patterns as well in children as with their parents, all of which is in our attitudes to change; if you are a parent of a child with obesity, please,  pretty please it is very important not to address this issue with your kid as an actual “weight problem” I know it sounds pretty crazy to be saying this, but to see moms saying to me that they’ve come because their kid “needs to loose all this extra weight”, “it’s fat”, pointing out their “cute baby fat”, etc, etc, etc… it’s really disturbing, and mostly because many of these moms actually have really bad eating habits their selves, so their passing negative  images, making them think and accept the idea that they are ‘fat’ and actually making them act the part, emotionally I mean, this creates a very bad, low concept of their selves, I hope I’m making myself clear, because I don’t want you to believe that we have to disguise the issue,  but to address it in a different manner instead; to do it in means of teaching your kid healthy food habits and a healthy life style for that matter.

So, when your kid is gaining some  extra weight, promote physical activities, going outdoors but mostly listen to your kid, because this kind of attitudes sometimes is a matter of attention… your kid needs to know that they are not the problem and they are important to you, as well as to make them see that, this new found activities are in means to spend more time together, not to change any of you.

The nutritionist job

Hello all of you readers out there!! 🙂

Just writing quickly to share with you all an uneasiness I can’t get over with..

I’ve been attending to this national pediatric congress and I heard something I wasn’t really expecting from a speaker doctor who was about to begin his lecture when he said that when a kid suffering from obesity comes in a Pediatricians’ consultory, there’s no point in reffering them with the nutritionist, because all we CAN do and WILL do is sending them home with an hypocaloric diet!! and that my friends really shocked me; mostly because in pediatric clinical nutrition, this is a big important issue that we as nutritionist face when we go to reality jobs; but I’m saying this just to clear some things up (as I wasn’t able to talk to this doctor because allegedly he had a plane to catch) and to send this message to whoever this might get to.

Nutritionist aren’t just a bag of diets walking aroud nor for adult people never the less for the pediatric patient.

I evaluate the whole environment of the person who has taken time of their important day to come see me, time which everyone should respect. after an detailed interview wich includes besides their availability of getting certain food types, weight history, food habits history and nowadays, activities throughout the day, anthropometry, biochemical evaluation when necesary, among many many others; I come to a diagnosis then an action plan evaluating different posibilities whith the patient and their family or whoever gets involved in the process, continuous monitoring and reevaluations as well as nutrition education.

So, when it comes to a child suffering from obesity, the treatment in any matter is based on a diet low in calories (much less in this population group, as they are in a full growth and development fase), it is adjusting certain habits from the previous evaluation, in case a activity plan is requiered it comes with an eating and drinking plan as well, taking into account what the kid is going to do and to metabolize and in which intervals in this activity plan.

I’m sure not everybody thinks as this speaker doctor, but the problem for me was THAT itself, that I was hearing those words from a speaker doctor getting his message to a few hundreds of people, so I thought it was important to get it out of my chest if not directly to him, with you all, so you don’t get the wrong impression when it comes to the job us nutritionist do.

Getting your kid to eat better, not so difficult!

Hello everyone out there!!

This week I want to tell you about one of the main topics in consultation, wich was… “poor appetite”, such a common thing in toddlers, but that doesn’t mean that we have to let them starve and loose weight, height, etc.

Actually when I finish all the evaluation process I realized that most of the moms had the same kind of problem, incorrect feeding habits, no schedule at all when it comes to eating, chase the kid all around the house all so he can eat 1 tea spoon of soup or whatever! and so on and so on, 😛 does it ring any bell?

Well, although  there’s some artificial appetite stimulator, I prefer first to drain out all the natural possibilities to do so, and that is what I’m writing about today! 🙂 

Usually, if your kid does not want to eat and you’re following him throughout the house and he ends up aeting just some spoons of food and this goes on all day because you think that ‘something is better than nothing when it comes to eating’, well I don’t think so. Here’s why, imagine you’re thristy but you don’t take a complete glass of water, you only get some drops all day long, then you won’t feel thristy, but you won’t be satisfying the need for water that your cells are asking for either, the same happends with your kids’ meal, they won’t feel hungry anymore, but they won’t be getting all the nutrients they need to appropiate growth and development. If that’s the case, I recomend something less stressfull for you and more useful for your kiddo… stablish eating mealtimes, this will be a lot more effective, and will help you in more than one way.

By stablishing mealtimes, you help your kids’ body to be more active when he needs to, to sleep better and actually rest besides beeing all over the place, he’ll end up eating everything you put in his plate because is the natural reaction of the body when we manage to have that habit in  house. 

It might not be just that simple the first day, but if you do it everyday, by day 4-7 you’ll have your kid sitting at the table at breakfast, luch and dinner all by himself, it is a matter of patience and perseverance  and after all, it is about getting healthy habits to your child, so if he doesn’t want to eat please do not follow him all around, wait and offer your meal at the same time, but be sure to start the new strategy first thing a day, so it’d be easier.

Always remember not to force him into any food, because they are great memorizers, and they’ll associate the ‘ugly-food’ to angry-mom, scolded-kid, etc., and it’ll make it harder for him to accept he has to eat it. It’ll be better to introduce the difficult food with something he already likes and enjoys, also you can try by making a cream out of this particular food and serve it as a garrison, not as the main dish.

Make the mealtime a family time, either you have a big or small family, it always help your kid  to see other people eating toguether, chatting, avoid TV, or any other distractions; eat in front of him food that is difficult for him to accept, it’ll make him curious and end up trying it as well.

Limit excessive liquids right before meal time, it’ll make him feel satisfied and will make more difficult for him to finish his hole meal.
